Our Lonely Lava Walk ~ Hawaii 2013

Our Lonely Lava Walk

The road south from Hilo (the “Red Road”) ends before the active Kilauea volcano. We hiked through lava flows that were only years old, and visited a new black beach formed at the end of our path.  Being the sole tourists on the path, we felt like ancient Hawaiians exploring new ground.  Our shoes crunched on the red cinder trail, only to be drowned out by the sound of pounding surf as we neared the new beach. It was quite an experience.
